My name is Cindy Beard. I am a Christian, homeschooling mom of 8 beautiful children. I have been married to my husband for 18 years. For a few years, early in our marriage, I taught school. I worked in the public schools of SC. When we moved to VA, I was expecting our second child. We decided that I would stay at home and put my focus on raising our children. We went on to have a child about every 2 years (including 2 pregnancies that ended in miscarriages). When our oldest was 4 years old, we felt led by God to look into homeschooling. After a year of researching and praying, we decided to try homeschooling. We have continued to do so for the last 10 years.
I have always been very interested in the birthing process as well as anything that had to do with raising healthy children. When I had my first child, it was my first experience with any type of real pain. I opted for an epidural early in my labor with her. Though that was not what I had originally planned, I was pleased at the time with how my birthing experience went. I went on to have 2 more births with epidurals and 5 without. Once I realized that I could do it without medication, that is the way I preferred to go.
A friend of mine encouraged me to be a doula after I was her support person at her second birth. So I looked into the different certifying organizations and felt like DONA (www.dona.org) was the perfect fit for me. It took me almost 2 years to complete all of the certification requirements such as reading requirements, a workshop, childbirth class, attendance at births, evaluations, and various paperwork. But it was definitely worth it because I have now found a way to do what I enjoy--helping new mothers during the most wonderful time of pregnancy, labor, and the early days of babyhood!
